The Opportunities and Challenges of Cloud Laboratories in Producing AI-Ready Biological Data

This March, BIO-ISAC was invited to join colleagues from the Council on Strategic Risks and the Engineering Biology Research Consortium for a Hill briefing.
"Rapid advances at the intersection of biotechnology, artificial intelligence, and automation are opening a new frontier for US innovation and security. Cloud laboratories—digitally connected, automated facilities that execute biological experiments remotely and often in conjunction with AI Agents—are expanding research capacity, accelerating discovery, and strengthening the infrastructure that underpins the American bioeconomy."
The consensus from the event is clear: the transition to cloud labs is inevitable and necessary for the next wave of biotechnological breakthroughs. However, to realize this potential safely, the industry must develop international standards for bio-digital security.
As we build the infrastructure for the future of biology, we must ensure that the "digital locks" on our cloud labs are just as secure as the physical ones on our freezer doors.
